Multiscale asymptotics for the Skeleton of the Madden-Julian Oscillation and Tropical–Extratropical Interactions

چکیده
Abstract: Anewmodel is derived and analyzed for tropical–extratropical interactions involving theMadden– Julian oscillation (MJO). The model combines (i) the tropical dynamics of the MJO and equatorial baroclinic waves and (ii) the dynamics of barotropic Rossbywaves with signi cant extratropical structure, and the combined system has a conserved energy. The method of multiscale asymptotics is applied to systematically derive a system of ordinary di erential equations (ODEs) for three-wave resonant interactions. Two novel features are (i) a degenerate auxiliary problem with overdetermined equations due to a compatibility condition (meridional geostrophic balance) and (ii) cubic self-interaction terms that are not typically found in threewave resonance ODEs. Several examples illustrate applications to MJO initiation and termination, including cases of (i) theMJO, equatorial baroclinic Rossbywaves, and barotropic Rossbywaves interacting, and (ii) the MJO, baroclinic Kelvinwaves, andbarotropic Rossbywaves interacting. Resonancewith theKelvinwave is not possible here if only dry variables are considered, but it occurs in the moist model here through interactions with water vapor and convective activity.

Tropical - Extratropical Interactions with the MJO Skeleton and 1 Climatological Mean Flow
Simplified asymptotic models are developed to investigate tropical– extratropical interactions. Two kinds of interactions are illustrated in the model: (i) MJO initiation through extraction of energy from the barotropic Rossby waves and (ii) MJO termination via energy transfer to extratropical Rossby waves. A new feature, in comparison to previous simplified models, is that here these waves int...

متن کاملModels for Multiscale Interactions. Part II: Madden–Julian Oscillation, Moisture, and Convective Momentum Transport
It is well known that the envelope of the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) consists of smaller-scale convective systems, including mesoscale convective systems (MCS), tropical cyclones, and synoptic-scale waves called ‘‘convectively coupled equatorial waves’’ (CCW). In fact, recent results suggest that the fundamental mechanisms of the MJO involve interactions between the synoptic-scale CCW and ...
متن کاملExtratropical Forcing Triggered the 2015 Madden–Julian Oscillation–El Niño Event
In this paper, we report the triggering effect of extratropical perturbation on the onset of an atypical Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) and onset of the 2015-16 El Niño in March 2015. The MJO exhibited several unique characteristics: the effect of extratropical forcing, atypical genesis location and timing in the equatorial western Pacific, and the extremity of amplitudes in many aspects. The ...
متن کاملMadden-julian Oscillation
[1] The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is the dominant component of the intraseasonal (30–90 days) variability in the tropical atmosphere. It consists of large-scale coupled patterns in atmospheric circulation and deep convection, with coherent signals in many other variables, all propagating eastward slowly ( 5 m s ) through the portion of the Indian and Pacific oceans where the sea surface i...
